Angeles Crest Highway is super twisty California mountain road through the San Gabriel Mountains and Angeles National Forest. Heavily trafficked and adored by motorcyclists, it’s fame is tantamount to “The Snake” or Mulholland Drive among motor-heads and Sunday cruisers.
At the end of winter I found myself in Spring Valley Canyon in southern New Mexico. Playing cards late into the night, I stepped outside my friend’s adventure van just before midnight and voila… the moonrise on the mountains was stark and beautiful. I had to capture it!
Light painting, long exposure, and astrophotography are some of my favorite types of photography work. While all photographic styles are art, I find this to be the least scientific of them all. Each exposure taking at least 30 seconds, even the smallest light leak blowing your whole exposure. It reminds me of developing black and white film in the dark room back in high school. Ah, nostalgia.

Shooting astrophotography some 30 feet away from a camp full of drunk folks with headlamps is a challenge, but I made it work! Jason Lightner’s rally Porsche race car out in the Arizona desert during a Gambler 500 SoCal event called “Out of Bounds” in December of 2018.
When I was out on my near-year long road trip I swung through southern California in October. Jessi was in the throes of her prep for the Baja 500 rally in 2017. Since I wanted to visit, she invited me to come help. I did some rust removal that day, we chatted and goofed off. She took off for the rally the following week, with her truck unable to finish due to an internally broken steering cylinder.
